We are thrilled to announce our Thursday night Kick-Off Concert at the historic Palace Grand Theatre, a Parks Canada National Historic Site that has long been home to DCMF’s cherished kick-off concert.

We are honoured to present internationally acclaimed artist Tim Baker, supported by home-town favourites Evrytt Willow & the Whip-Poor-Wills. This powerful, one-night-only event is a must-see.

*Please note: this is a separately ticketed event. Festival passes and camping passes for the Dawson City Music Festival (Fri-Sun only) are available here.

Tim Baker is best known as the writer and frontperson of the highly acclaimed, multi-award winning band, Hey Rosetta!, who for over a decade have shared their sweeping and high-energy – yet tender – sound all over the world, playing major festivals, stadiums, theatres and clubs.

At the end of 2017, twelve years after their inception, the Polaris-shortlisted, Juno-nominated group went on hiatus, after selling 10,000 tickets to five farewell shows. For principal songwriter and lead vocalist Tim Baker, this was the start of a new chapter.

Baker’s debut solo album, Forever Overhead (April 2019), produced by Marcus Paquin (The National, Local Natives), blends piano ballads with ebullient folk-rock tracks featuring Liam O’Neill (Suuns), Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station), as well as Mishka Stein & Joe Grass (Patrick Watson), and represents Tim to his core — a wonderfully imaginative songwriter, a thoughtful poet, a playful arranger, and a technically profound musician.

“The first solo release from Hey Rosetta! frontman Tim Baker reassures fans that, yes, he’s on his own, but no, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.” – Michael Beda, Dominated

Born on the Atlantic ancient songs of the hungry sea, Evrytt developed an unshakable attraction to the life described in early folk music; wandering souls searching for truth, the haunting wails of endless freight trains, the dusty squalor of life on the road. Despite continuing to tour the country from end to end and back again, Evrytt Willow calls Dawson City home.

The music of Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Rodgers, and The Carter Family would stir emotions in Evrytt that he would learn to immortalize as they had done so long ago. The eerie hymns of Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, and Leadbelly would help distinguish the lonesome cry that he identifies with and characterizes. The age-old tradition of capturing the spirit of destitution, heartbreak and a lust for life seeped into Evrytt’s sound, and he continues to catalogue these mysteries in song.

This event is supported by The Yukon Arts Centre with support from the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des Arts du Canada, Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Yukon, and our Proud Partner, Parks Canada Yukon.

The Dawson City Music Festival and Kick-Off Concert take place on the Traditional Territory of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, who have lived along the Klondike River for millennia. We gratefully acknowledge our status as guests and are deeply appreciative to live, work, and produce events here.
