Uncle Jimmy & The Hammerstones
Assembled initially to provide fiddle music for community square dances, Uncle Jimmy and the Hammerstones have developed into Dawson City’s premier fiddle ensemble. Jimmy Roberts is a Gwitch’en fiddler that can light up just about any instrument that comes his way and comes at music with pure joy and a desire to share culture and country tunes with young and old. The Hammerstones backing band has had a few incarnations, and the current crew kicked off their first shows together at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre on National Indigenous People’s day a few years ago. They haven’t stopped since. Peter Menzies leads the backing band on vocals, fiddle and guitar, Alex Halbom on stand-up or electric bass, and Basia Hinton on drums, with a rotating cast of guest musicians.
Partnering with the North Klondyke Highway Music Society, Uncle Jimmy and the Hammerstones have played community events in Dawson, Pelly, and Mayo with the intent of bringing youth and Elders together to enjoy the magic of the fiddle.
“We play both types of music, country and western!”
