“a dizzying avalanche of melody and adrenaline”
The Courtneys drift back to the shoegazing sound of the early 90s, drawing from influences like Teenage Fanclub and Pavement. Courtney Loove’s dreamy guitar riffs add a timeless power-pop element to the punk backbone formed by Sydney Koke’s driving basslines, while drummer and lead singer Jen Twynn Payne delivers emotive, heartfelt lyrics with a strong, powerful vocal style. The Courtneys work through a passionate, collaborative songwriting process to deliver a special blend of “artisanal grunge” and a distinct brand of fuzzed out lo-fi pop.
The Courtneys first album came out in 2013 on a small independent label based in the band’s hometown of Vancouver, BC. They have worked with a number of independent labels including Hockey Dad Records, Conquest of Noise in Australia, and Waterslide Records in Japan, and Burger Records and Gnar tapes in the USA. The Courtneys have released a number of singles and music videos and toured throughout Canada and the USA, including spots supporting Tegan and Sara and Mac Demarco. In 2015 The Courtneys made their way to Australia and New Zealand and as a result was signed with Flying Nun Records, a New Zealand based label that has influenced The Courtneys from early on. With a raw, lo-fi sound and DIY sensibility, The Courtneys charm audiences everywhere they go. You’re about to experience their catchy, tuneful, and rhythmic sounds this summer at the Dawson City Music Festival– check out The Courtneys!
