Currently based in Melbourne, AUS, New Zealand-born Mihirangi was brought up in a touring musical family, and there’s no question that she inherited the family music gene. An exceptionally talented singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Mihirangi has toured extensively, performing with the likes of Michael Franti, Lee Scratch Perry, John McCutchens, and The Waifs. Using a combination of layered vocals, intricate harmonies, beat boxing, vocal bass lines, acoustic guitar, tribal rhythms and R&B, her music shifts naturally from danceable rhythms to quiet reveries, while her lyrics provides insight into her emotions, personal triumphs, fears and political convictions, offering a refreshing perspective on contemporary culture. 2004’s Moemoea Reka, a collection of contemporary Maori originals sung in Maori with traditional instrumentation and vocal arranging infused with world sounds such as fl amenco guitar and African drums, was Mirhirangi’s fi rst solo release, and she followed it up this April with the assured and beautiful Kulcha Nation, a rare album that expresses the warm vibes and sounds of her live concerts and highlights her considerable a cappella vocal strengths.
