John K Samson first appeared on stage at the Dawson City Music Festival in 2002 with one of Canada’s greatest and most highly regarded rock bands, the one and only Weakerthans. Back to join the line-up of our 2006 festival, John will be appearing sans bandmates - all the better to accentuate his enormous talent, solidly unpretentious demeanour, and literate and lyrical songwriting skills. Former bass player for the legendary punk band Propaghandi, John left that band in 1996 to pursue other interests, including the co-founding of Arbeiter Publishing, a not-for-profi t publishing collective that has since released numerous titles dealing with contemporary politics, culture, and social issues. He hooked up with future band-mates John Sutton and Jason Tait just a year after leaving Propaghandi, and in 1997 recorded Fallow, the acclaimed fi rst release by the newly minted Weakerthans. Having since released two more exceptional albums of sophisticated and literate indie pop, The Weakerthans continue to tour all over North America and Europe while John works on new material for the band, continues to be heavily involved in Arbeiter Ring Publishing and works on other arts and music projects. His latest projects include playing in the background of Clive Holden’s Trains of Winnipeg, and reading poetry on Christine Fellows' latest album Paper Anniversary.
