Dena Zagi is the Traditional-Contemporary project of Denis Shorty and Jenny Froehling. Dennis is both singer & songwriter and plays the guitar. He was born underneath a tree near Ross River and is Kaska First Nation. Jenny hails from Germany and plays the traditional drum, drum set, and First Nations flute. Dena Zagi means “people’s voice”, and the duo’s music is written in the Kaska Language, with lyrics about the land, animals, respect, ancestors, and traditions. They’ve played together in various venues in Canada and in Germany. They hope to encourage young people to preserve their language through music. Dena Zagi is proudly nominated for CBC’s Indigenous Music Awards in the category of Best Inuit, Indigenous Language, or Francophone album.
